23 games in, and it has been nothing short of a disaster. Probably some of the worst hockey I’ve seen this team play, since the twilight of the Iggy/Kipper years. Scariest thing however, it is looking far too similar right now to those years, in which Flames missed the playoffs 6 years in a row.
So, where is everybody at, what’s next, and can they salvage the season at this point??
I am not confident as of right now 1:15 PM on March 4th, 2021 that they can salvage it. In these situations, I want to be proven wrong as much as anything, but the problem is, its the consistency, always comeback to it, and they would need to play .692 hockey down the stretch in the final 32 games, based on the way things have gone so far, not confident that it will be the case.
Now the hard questions, decisions come. If the Flames can’t salvage the season and end up missing the playoffs, here’s how I think things should go in the offseason.
If Jack Eichel becomes available, Brad Treliving needs to do whatever he can to bring Eichel to Calgary. However, if it doesn’t work out or if the Flames can’t land the superstar, then I think you have to start thinking of a retool or blowing it up.
Where I land on that conversation is, the organization needs a pivot in direction regardless, but I also think because this team has been a middle of the pack team since probably 1989.
I believe the only way they can leave that middle, which is death in this league, is going through a proper rebuild, but the organization has never done, whether it be during the Young Guns or the post Iginla years, they have not done it the right way.
Guess what Im trying to say is, I am for a proper reset, IF (thats a big IF), that is they can’t salvage things this season.
But we shall wait and see what comes in the next 32 games. I can say this, interesting days, weeks, even months for this organizations future are coming.
Have a Blasty Day
